Ernst Jandl

Poet and dramatist Ernst Jandl was invited to the Stückemarkt in 1979 with the play “Aus der Fremde”. He studied German and English language and literature in Vienna, worked there as a grammar school teacher until 1979 and remains one of the most significant experimental poets of the modern age. His first collection of poems, “Andere Augen” (Other Eyes), was published in 1956 and he then went on to write many more, including “Laut und Luise” in 1966, “Sprechblasen” (Speech Bubbles) in 1968, “der künstliche baum” (the artificial tree) in 1970, “dingfest” (thingsure) in 1974, “für alle” (1974), “die bearbeitung der mütze” (1978), “der gelbe hund” (1980), “idyllen” (1989) and “Peter und die Kuh” (1996). He wrote numerous radio plays, many of them in collaboration with Friederike Mayröcker. He was also awarded many prizes, among them the Georg Trakl Prize for poetry (1974), the Literature Prize of the City of Vienna (1976), the Mülheim Dramatists’ Prize (1980), the Georg Büchner Prize (1984), the Grand Austrian State Prize for Literature (1984), the Heinrich von Kleist Prize (1993) and the Friedrich Hölderlin Prize (1995).
