Simon Stone

Simon Stone was born in Basel in 1984. His family first moved to Cambridge and then to Melbourne in 1996. Simon Stone studied at Victoria College of the Arts in Melbourne and worked in Australia for some years as a director, author and actor. In 2007, he founded “The Hayloft Company”, a theatre company for which he adapted classical dramatic texts like Chekhov’s “Platonov”, Seneca’s “Thyestes”, Wedekind’s “Spring Awakening” or Ibsen’s “Little Eyolf”. In 2011, he became associated director at Sydney’s Belvoir Theatre. His rewriting of Ibsen’s “The Wild Duck” was presented at the Ibsen-Festival in Oslo, at Wiener Festwochen and at the Holland Festival in Amsterdam. “The Oresteia” based on Aeschylus, which he directed at Theater Oberhausen in 2014, was his first work for German-language theatre. In the same year, Theater der Welt in Mannheim, Holland Festival and the theatre Nanterre-Amandiers presented Simon Stone’s production of “Thyestes”. In 2015, he created the feature film “The Daughter”, which was again based on “The Wild Duck” and screened at film festivals in Venice, Toronto, London and Stockholm. Since the 2015/16 season, Simon Stone has been associated director at Theater Basel. His adaptation of Ibsen’s “John Gabriel Borkman” received the Nestroy Theatre Award in the category of “Best director”, was named “Production of the Year 2016” in the critics’ survey of the magazine “Theater heute” and was invited to the 2016 Berlin Theatertreffen. His production of “Angels in America” received the 2016 Nestroy Theatre Award in the category “Best German-language production”. In the 2016/17, Simon Stone made his debut as an opera director at Theater Basel with a production of Erich Korngold’s “Die tote Stadt”.
