Break & Change
Ensemble Adapter © Rut Sigurdardóttir
The multifaceted Berlin-based ensemble Adapter devotes itself to contemporary music with boundless energy and great pleasure in experimentation. At MaerzMusik the instrumentalists from Iceland and Germany present current contemporary music works by composers of Turkish, Kurdish and Jordanian origin. Berlin-based composer and Bağlama player Taner Akyol is an ensemble guest.
He recalls his childhood from a Western music perspective and integrates the sound of the Bağlama, the traditional Turkish lute, in his ensemble composition “Hatirlamalar”. It is not the synthesis but the duality of the sounds, the co-existence of the “other”, that lies at the centre of the solo work “Les deux visages de l’orient” by Saed Haddad who, familiar as he is with Western music, attempts to define his Arabic identity in Europe. Atac Sezer, who like many composers began his academic training in his homeland and continued it in the European West, also devotes himself to individual timbres in particular, which he spatially unfolds in “Colour Catch” and mixes them to something new. “Between Me and the Other” is what Swedish-Kurdish composer Hardi Kurda titled his work, concentrating on the free interpretation and interaction of the musicians in order to create an open sound atmosphere. Independent of cultural conventions, Turgut Erçetin makes use of unusual instrumentation and a large number of different sound spectrums in his works. Finally, composer and guitarist Taylan Cihan is active in the fields of improvisation, sound installation and interactive performance within a cross-border experimental sound culture.
