The French conductor Geoffroy Jourdain has compiled a very special programme for the vocal ensemble Les Cris de Paris which is being performed for the first time in Germany at the Musikfest Berlin. The singers explore the characteristic “strange harmonies” of Late Renaissance music. What do we perceive when music deviates from a normality with which we are no longer familiar? How do we relate for example to the microtonal pieces by Nicola Vicentino who divided the octave into 31 notes on the basis of Ancient Greek music? In “La strana armonia d’amore”, madrigals by Vicentino, Carlo Gesualdo, Sigismondo d’India and Michelangelo Rossi are interspersed by musical sequences by the Italian composer Francesca Verunelli who adheres to the model of the Renaissance musician in her work „VicentinoOo“.
