The 62nd edition of Berliner Festspiele’s Theatertreffen will take place from 2 to 18 May 2025 at Haus der Berliner Festspiele as well as other venues across Berlin. Beside the 10 remarkable productions from the German-language region selected by a jury of seven critics, since 1965 the festival has invited aspiring artists to take part in the International Forum, a 17-day scholarship programme. The Open Call is going out now to theatre makers from all disciplines of the performing arts. The deadline for applications is 5 December 2024.

The International Forum under co-directors Aljoscha Begrich and Sima Djabar Zadegan is a platform for global exchange and the promotion of young theatre makers. It is intended to provide an initial impetus for collaboration, the search for diverse local perspectives on global issues, and a free space for communal play. It focusses less on the completed work than on all the creative processes that precede artistic work to gather new impulses for individual artistic practice.

In 2025, 35 artists from around the world who are beginning their artistic practice will once again be invited to come to Berlin, to watch theatre together, to talk, to (re-)consider, to experiment and to make connections.

The International Forum’s programme includes attendance at all productions invited to Theatertreffen as well as events of the accompanying programme, discussions with the festival director and members of the Theatertreffen-jury, participation in intensive workshops led by artists on the practice of performing arts and artists’ talks as well as – in co-operation with Goethe-Institut – networking with international theatre makers. For the 2025 edition, the International Forum will move to Uferstudios, a former tram-depot in the Berlin district of Wedding.

This Open Call for the International Forum is addressed at artists at the beginning of their artistic practice who have already gathered initial professional experience. They may be from all sectors of the performing arts, especially from the fields of directing, acting, set and costume design, dramaturgy, text production, music, video, performance, media, choreography, production management and theatre education.

More detailed information on the International Forum and the Open Call is available on Berliner Festspiele’s website.
