What is the difference between anti-Semitism and racism, which alliances of solidarity in the struggle between both phenomena should be consolidated? Meron Mendel, Saba-Nur Cheema and Sina Arnold will present the book “Frenemies” which collects short texts on anti-Semitism, anti-Muslim and anti-Black racism by researchers, educational practitioners and activists in the form of an ‘FAQ’.

It really is not all that complicated, right? Both anti-Semitism and racism are inhumane attitudes that everyone should fight against – and criticising these ideologies should therefore always be a joint effort. But in practice, incompatibilities, substantial disagreements and turf wars occur again and again, along with mutual exclusions, relativization, accusations and a climate of distrust.

The book “Frenemies. Antisemitismus, Rassismus und ihre Kritiker*innen (Frenemies. Anti-Semitism, Racism and their Critics)” was edited by Meron Mendel, Saba-Nur Cheema and Sina Arnold and published by Verbrecher Verlag in 2022. It assembles short texts by researchers, educational practitioners and activists, presented as answers to ‘naïve questions’ in the form of an FAQ. What is the difference between anti-Semitism and racism? Are there connections between National Socialism and colonialism? Is BDS anti-Semitic? Are Jewish people ‘white’? How are these issues debated in other countries? The book hopes to give a low-threshold introduction to a complex, albeit highly present and conflict-laden field of topics. It focuses on the issues of anti-Semitism as well as anti-Muslim and anti-Black racism.
