The architect Lina Bo Bardi famously said that every museum deserves a playground. Echoing that thought and anticipating the upcoming topic of play at the Gropius Bau, Radical Playgrounds arrives at Gropius Hain for eleven weeks. Conceived as a cross between a sculpture park, a Spielplatz (playground), a museum extension and a temporary funfair, many of its installations and pavilions use playground vocabulary, be it a swing, a water fountain, a carousel or a labyrinth, to reveal what is left unspoken: histories of inclusion and exclusion, engaging activism through the medium of play, a dark past buried underground and a necessity to rethink the notion of interdependence on this planet.

Performances during “Radical Playgrounds: From Competition to Collaboration”

Performances

The playworkers are hosts, dialogue partners, supporters, playmates and experts and design artistic-educational scenarios for Radical Playgrounds. Over a period of 11 weeks, they continuously developed the art trail through a wide variety of activities.&nbsp;

Playworkers

While many exhibitions are considered finished upon opening, “Radical Playgrounds” challenges this notion, embarking on a journey together with architects, artists, mediators, researchers, neighbours and visitors to transform and expand the art parcours with its overarching programme starting at the end of April. Embracing the motto “From Competition to Collaboration”, “Radical Playgrounds” invites everybody to convert the former parking lot of the Gropius Bau into a vibrant public space. Through a series of workshops, talks and guided tours, participants will build real and imaginary bridges together, invent games and embody collaborations. In weekly discussions with international guests, the on-site playable installations will be contextualised, and the diverse meanings of play and its socio-political implications will be explored. The programme poses questions: How does “Radical Playgrounds” sound, speak, feel, smell and taste? What can practice and opportunity spaces for coexistence and collaborative interaction between humans and nature look like? How can spatial infrastructure be made more inclusive, social and equitable? The public programme is an invitation to play, but also a platform for contemplation that strengthens community bonds, especially right now, and creates opportunities to deepen existing neighbourly relationships.

Viviane Tabach is a curator, art mediator, and artist. For more than fifteen years she has been working with art mediation, exploring the intersection between curatorial, artistic and educational practices. She runs the project space Co-Making Matters, located at Haus der Statistik, and is also a founding member of the collective Cruising Curators.Jakob Eichhorn specialises in cultural communication, focusing on art, history, and politics. With an academic background in public history, journalism and communication studies, his focus is on stories as a social tool. His experience in curation and education has shaped his desire to make art, science and social discourse accessible.David Bruckm&uuml;ller has worked as a filmmaker, photographer, IT-Technician and in several art-related positions. In his practice, he enjoys treating images and text, mostly concerning niches and nuances crawling into society from its edges and/or social questions. He also likes working with building materials&nbsp;(especially wood), probably stemming from one of his former lifes as an architect to be.Oliver Gudzowski is an architect, artist, performer and researcher and loves to work with their surroundings. They enjoy exploring queer and other spaces and their relationship to the body, searching for the appropriate tools to question the state of being.Amelie Pauline Hornung used to work in art education at Gropius Bau for several years and is currently writing her Master Thesis about Urban Living in Philosophy. She is interested in the intersection of art, education, inclusion and community practices.Max Reiniger works as a mediator, author and performer in independent theater projects. He is interested in recycling, entertainment and humor as mediation practices and reality as an aesthetic effect of art. He directs with the group Blomen/Moré/Reiniger and is co-organizer of the Theaterkongress Offline Berlin.Niusha Ramzani is an artist and activist living and working in Berlin. She studied philosophy, art history and design and has worked with the Gropius Bau, MIT (USA) and Floating e.V., among others. She is part of the collective "Rhizomatic Squad for Caring Technologies" and is active in various political contexts. She currently works mainly with film and text.Christopher-Felix Hahn is a freelance performer, theater maker and architectural historian. He has worked with Tino Sehgal, Nico and the Navigators and Showcase Beat Le Mot, among others. In his own pieces he usually deals with the history of historically charged places, such as the Haus des Rundfunks in Berlin or the Schiller-Oper in St. Pauli.Duc Vu Manh is a Vietnamese-German art mediator and creative worker, he focuses on pressing issues of social justice, solidarity and autonomy. He sees curiosity about art as the key to creating encounters: It enables storytelling, focusing on community, empowerment and validation of diverse perspectives. Duc Vu Manh lives and works in Berlin.Daria Redkina is a performance artist working with sound and sonic objects, often involved in site-specific interventions in complex acoustic environments, she adapts her work to space and its unique architectural dimensions. She loves to work on the intersection of sound design, sculpture and interactive media.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In daily walk-throughs, the playworkers share their expertise and thoughts on the artworks and set individual thematic highlights.&nbsp;The playworkers are hosts, conversation partners, supporters, playmates and experts, who create occasions for artistic-educational scenarios within the art parcours. You can meet them for a stroll, a conversation, an exploration or a game on Radical Playgrounds.

City playgrounds are particularly significant public realms because it is here that the tension between rules and freedom, the familiar and the unknown, borders and transgression, the present and the future, risk and security are constantly negotiated.

Radical Playgrounds

What significance do we give to playing? What significance do we give to playing in public spaces? And to the playing of children? We as adults have a lot to learn from playing children: immersing ourselves with no distractions, forgetting space and time, entering imaginary worlds, moments of full intensity, with no fear of missing out on anything.

The international Jazzfest Research Lab&nbsp;welcomes academics and students to take a critical look at the festival’s archive, its programmes, creators, musicians and – last but not least – its myths. In two seminars during the summer semester of 2024, students from the Berlin University of the Arts and the University of Hildesheim have explored the festival’s history from various perspectives. In this film, the participants give a first look at how they dealt with their research subject.

To mark its 60th anniversary, Jazzfest Berlin is celebrating the cultural diversity of the neighbouring district of Moabit in collaboration with around 35 official partners and initiatives and with over 350 participants of all ages.&nbsp;In June 2024, interviews were conducted with 20 partners who presented their perspectives, wishes and ideas for the Jazzfest Community Lab Moabit. You can get a first impression with this film.

The 10 Remarkable Productions 2024

On 26 January, the Theatertreffen’s jury of critics announced their selection of 10 remarkable productions for the 2024 Theatertreffen at a press conference. Our congratulations go to the nominated production teams and all participants! The programme will be published on 5 April.

“Radical Playgrounds”, an art parcours at the Gropius Bau, is spending eleven weeks exploring the differences between the concepts of play as competition and free play. Visitors are invited to walk and climb on the various installations and sculptures, to activate them and to shape the project collectively.

Young musical talents from all over Germany have applied for the Treffen junge Musikszene competition. A total of 13 acts, including four bands, one duo and eight soloists, will be invited to the festival. This year’s selection is very diverse and energetic, with a wide range of styles and bold experiments. The programme has been published and tickets are available now.

MaerzMusik&nbsp;2025 opens with “MELENCOLIA”, an experimental music theatre show by Brigitta Muntendorf and Moritz Lobeck. In immersive soundscapes, musicians from Ensemble Modern and the Apollo Choir of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden invite the audience to explore the creative and transformative power of melancholic worlds. <h3>Radical Playgrounds: From Competition to Collaboration</h3><h4>27 April to 14 July 2024</h4>Berlin is known for its numerous “Spielpl&auml;tze” for kids, but the project “Radical Playgrounds” is a place where play gets serious.&nbsp;It arrives at Gropius Hain for eleven weeks like an itinerant, temporary funfair: both melancholic and light-hearted, sad and joyful, funny and serious.&nbsp;
