William Forsythe is recognized as one of the world’s foremost choreographers. His work is acknowledged for reorienting the practice of ballet from its identification with classical repertoire to a dynamic 21st-century art form. Forsythes deep interest in the fundamental principles of organisation has led him to produce a wide range of projects including Installations, Films, and Web based knowledge creation. “A choreographic object is not a substitute for the body, but rather an alternative site for the understanding of potential instigation and organization of action to reside” (William Forsythe). In the KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Auguststra&szlig;e Berlin, two films will be shown during Foreign Affairs.

William Forsythe: Suspense & The Defenders Part 3

“As soon as you enter the castle you begin to dance”. William Forsythe’s monumental installation “White Bouncy Castle”, designed with Dana Caspersen to a soundtrack by Joel Ryan, is only superficially a wonderful summer plaything. Much more, this work that consists of a ton of snow-white plastic is an experience of physicality and interaction, a humorous but nonetheless serious examination of choreography in everyday life in which there are only participants, no observers. More then twenty years ago, William Forsythe began exploring other forms of choreography alongside his work for the stage and developed the term “Choreographic Objects“. “The ‘White Bouncy Castle’ alters the most diverse conditions of physical and spatial organisation connected to choreography into a self-sufficiency that is no longer in need of a guiding influence“, according to Forsythe. Complete destabilisation, absurd social situations and the inevitable integration of the participants into the act determine the distinguishing kinetics of the over 30-metre-long sculpture. The inadvertent euphoria that is created is infectious and, in some cases, addictive.

The phenomenon of the bet recurs in different social contexts; from post-Fordist financial speculation to gambling, from Mephistopheles’ bet with God to the Book of Job, wagers are made on the outcome of events.With “Connect Four: The Bet”, KW Institute for Contemporary Art continues, in the form of an exhibition, its examination of betting and speculation which also took place during “The Bet: A Study On Doubt, Contingency And Meaning In Economy And Society” performance weekend in conjunction with Foreign Affairs. Four artistic positions debate the meaning of the bet from different perspectives:With the installation-performance cycle “Mehrung”, the artists B&ouml;hler &amp; Orendt bring together two central aspect of the bet: belief and conjecture. As in Pascal’s wager, in which Cartesian doubt about the existence of God was skirted using a wager about God, the visitors to this new work submit themselves fully to a speculative future despite knowing that it could easily be false. The setting of “Mehrung #5” evokes a cult whose rules and rites cannot be deciphered. The object they have dedicated themselves to and worship in the manner of a religious sect is an exponential curve. The visualization of the exponential function reveals the growing progression of values in a coordinate system to be a reflection of a meritocracy in which the increase of capital is the highest priority.In their work “Get Lost” (2007), the French duo Claire Fontaine portrays the complexity of interpersonal relationships in the capitalist system. With reference to Hamlet’s words “I did love you once”, the viewer is presented with an excess of attractive pairing options on two monitors: A surplus of photos of attractive people flicker in front of viewers, positioning the idea of love in relation to consumption and affluence. As a result, the impression emerges that love isn’t merely fleeting and entertaining, that under neo-liberalism even love and relationships are subject to the rules of the market.The Swedish artist collective Goldin+Senneby examine the phenomenon of the bet against the background of capitalist financial speculation. In a society in which betting is largely reduced to meaningless games of chance, their work “The Discreet Charm” (2011/2012) positions economic financial strategies as the most significant bets of our time – wagers which put the existence of entire states and social systems on the line and yet can only be played and controlled by a few.In his contribution to the exhibition, the American artist Daniel Keller speculates about the future of work. Keller negotiates utopian and dystopian ideas (by the author Martin Ford, for example) about the work structures of the future, and translates this debate into visual objects: three-dimensional PVC lettering showing mindless job descriptions from a high-tech future, in which work and jobs have to be artificially produced.

These events are presented at a range of locations across Berlin but are concentrated primarily at their own two venues: the Gropius Bau and the Haus der Berliner Festspiele.

The Berliner Festspiele programme archive includes all events from 2004 onwards.

The international Jazzfest Research Lab&nbsp;welcomes academics and students to take a critical look at the festival’s archive, its programmes, creators, musicians and – last but not least – its myths. In two seminars during the summer semester of 2024, students from the Berlin University of the Arts and the University of Hildesheim have explored the festival’s history from various perspectives. In this film, the participants give a first look at how they dealt with their research subject.

To mark its 60th anniversary, Jazzfest Berlin is celebrating the cultural diversity of the neighbouring district of Moabit in collaboration with around 35 official partners and initiatives and with over 350 participants of all ages.&nbsp;In June 2024, interviews were conducted with 20 partners who presented their perspectives, wishes and ideas for the Jazzfest Community Lab Moabit. The 10 Remarkable Productions 2024

On 26 January, the Theatertreffen’s jury of critics announced their selection of 10 remarkable productions for the 2024 Theatertreffen at a press conference. Our congratulations go to the nominated production teams and all participants! The programme will be published on 5 April.

“Radical Playgrounds”, an art parcours at the Gropius Bau, is spending eleven weeks exploring the differences between the concepts of play as competition and free play. Visitors are invited to walk and climb on the various installations and sculptures, to activate them and to shape the project collectively.

Young musical talents from all over Germany have applied for the Treffen junge Musikszene competition. A total of 13 acts, including four bands, one duo and eight soloists, will be invited to the festival. This year’s selection is very diverse and energetic, with a wide range of styles and bold experiments. The programme has been published and tickets are available now.

MaerzMusik&nbsp;2025 opens with “MELENCOLIA”, an experimental music theatre show by Brigitta Muntendorf and Moritz Lobeck. In immersive soundscapes, musicians from Ensemble Modern and the Apollo Choir of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden invite the audience to explore the creative and transformative power of melancholic worlds. <h3>Radical Playgrounds: From Competition to Collaboration</h3><h4>27 April to 14 July 2024</h4>Berlin is known for its numerous “Spielpl&auml;tze” for kids, but the project “Radical Playgrounds” is a place where play gets serious.&nbsp;It arrives at Gropius Hain for eleven weeks like an itinerant, temporary funfair: both melancholic and light-hearted, sad and joyful, funny and serious.&nbsp;

<h3>Performing Arts Season</h3><h4>9 October 2024 to 25 January 2025</h4>The second season, presented between October 2024 and January 2025, will concentrate on memory and heritage in contemporary performing arts, with a focus on New York’s dance and performance scene.

All year round, Berliner Festspiele host a multitude of festivals, exhibitions and individual events in two houses – the Haus der Berliner Festspiele at Schaperstra&szlig;e and the Gropius Bau near Potsdamer Platz – and other venues in the city.

Playing, laughing, making noise, letting off steam, doing nothing – all in an exhibition venue! Since 4 September 2024, BAUBAU invites children to do exactly that. The artist Kerstin Br&auml;tsch designed an&nbsp;admission-free play space for kids, where more is allowed than forbidden. On the Gropius Bau’s ground floor, colourful wallpapers, structures, objects and open-ended material called “loose parts” configure flexible spaces that are shaped by children’s activities.

For more than three decades, Rirkrit Tiravanija has been expanding the possibilities of what can happen in an exhibition space. As part of his practice, the artist creates situations that offer space to eat and drink, play and rest. They encourage chance encounters, relationships and their failure – in other words: life.&nbsp;Since 12 September 2024,&nbsp;DAS GL&Uuml;CK IST NICHT IMMER LUSTIG&nbsp;(Happiness is not always fun)&nbsp;presents more than 80 of the artist’s works created between 1987 and 2024.

What can you do when everything changes from one day to the next? In “Bucket List”, Shlomi Shaban and Yael Ronen calibrate an escape from the unbearable present with songs between jazz and pop music as well as sorrowfully beautiful images. The recording of “Bucket List” – one of the three 2024 “Starke St&uuml;cke” of 3sat – will be accessible in the 3sat Media Library and the Media Library of Berliner Festspiele until 2 May 2027.
