Claire Vivianne Sobottke

Claire Vivianne Sobottke (*1982 in Duisburg) is based in Berlin and engages in the practice of choreography, performance and dance. She defines her work as a place of resistance and undoing, where norms of thinking and seeing can be challenged and changed. She is intrigued with the becoming of body and mind in sensual choreographic processes. 2017 she was awarded as “Hoffnungsträgerin des Tanzes” by the magazine Tanz and received the Fm4 Award at the ImPulsTanz Festival in Vienna for her solo “strange songs”. Voice, sound and language can become motors for choreography and content in Claire Vivianne Sobottke’s work. She works with the voice in its untamed states but also with different modes of speaking and singing. Coming from this practice she created “strange songs” in 2016. In 2013, she received a danceWeb Scholarship at ImPulsTanz Festival in Vienna. In 2014, she created “golden game” in collaboration with Tian Rotteveel. In 2016, she created “in the woods” as a part of the “Witch Dance Project” at Sophiensæle in Berlin, and in collaboration with Sheena McGrandles she developed “Bounty” as a part of Tanznacht Berlin 2016. In 2017, she initiated and curated “Amazonas”, an interdisciplinary platform to support and connect young female artists in Berlin. The initiative supports four artists and their specific research with a grant and encourages the playful encounter and confrontation of gender political limitations, structures and inscriptions. Claire has developed different formats of teaching, among others at PACT Zollverein in Essen, ImPulsTanz Festival in Vienna, HZT Berlin and University of the Arts Helsinki. In 2018, she hosted together with Silke Bake the format “Songs for Love and Rage” at Tanznacht Berlin and premiered “celestial sorrow” at Europalia Festival in Brussels – her third collaboration with Meg Stuart and Damaged Goods. Besides she was once again seen with her work “strange songs” at “Welt ohne Außen” 2018 at Martin-Gropius-Bau. Her last solo piece “Velvet” premiered at Tanz im August 2019 at HAU Hebbel am Ufer. In a setting of earth, plants and music by Tian Rotteveel, Claire Vivianne Sobottke portrays and deconstructs female sexuality, categorizations, identity and norms of seeing and thinking.
