Gesine Danckwart works around the globe as an author and director for film and theatre and as curator of art projects. She was assistant director at the Burgtheater, studied Theatre Sciences, German studies, and journalism in Berlin and, in the mid-nineties, founded and operated an independent crossover venue in Berlin. She worked at theatres such as Schauspielhaus Hamburg, Schauspielhaus Wien, Schauspiel Köln, Nationaltheater Mannheim, and within independent international structures, often in co-production with Theater Hebbel am Ufer, Sophiensæle, Gessnerallee. Among others, she has produced in China (Shanghai Expo, Beijing, Chengdu/Avignon), Egypt, South Africa and Brazil. Her texts have received several awards, have been translated into more than 15 languages and are presented at various venues in Austria and abroad (including Graz, Munich, Frankfurt, Bochum, Magdeburg, Zurich, Tel Aviv, Cairo, Santiago, Copenhagen, Tampere, Moscow, Yemen, Vienna Festival) and as radio plays. Her feature film “umdeinleben” premiered at the Munich Film Festival 2009. With Chez Company, she realised several performance series in which a bar factory was digitally mirrored and a game with avatars was created. This resulted in multi-media formats such as “Chez Icke” (since 2011), “Bergblaumachen” (2016), “Avatar Tales” (2018).
