Born in Sicily in 1947, composer Salvatore Sciarrino primarily acquired his skills autodidactically despite studies with Turi Belfiore and courses in electronic music with Franco Evangelisti. He has cultivated an individual, unmistakable musical language that explores the boundaries between sound and noise. Ultra-thin textures and gentle gestures have often defined his compositions.
Sciarrino’s many music theatre works break down the representative layers and combine non-linear narrative structures with a mystical aura and surreal inner worlds. He has taught at the conservatories of Milan, Perugia and Florence and was artistic director of the Teatro Communale in Bologna from 1978 to 1980. The composer has been a member of the Academy of the Arts, Berlin since 2004.
