Helmut Lachenmann

Helmut Lachenmann was born in 1935 in Stuttgart, and is a member of the most influential composers of his generation. In his music he explores new sonorities, especially the boundaries between sound, noise and silence. At the same time, he critically reflects the process of creating music and the act of listening. This not only applies to his instrumental works but also his opera “Das Mädchen mit den Schwefelhölzern” (WP Hamburg 1997), which is considered to be a key work in contemporary music theatre. Lachenmann studied at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart before becoming a student of Luigi Nono in 1958. He was a professor of composition at the universities of music in Hanover and Stuttgart and is the recipient of several important awards.
