Michael Spyres is one of the most sought-after tenors of his generation. Born in Missouri, he began his studies in the USA and continued them at the Vienna Conservatory. He first sprang to international attention in 2008 as Otello at Rossini in Wildbad and as an ensemble member of Deutsche Oper Berlin, where he made his debut as Tamino.
Engagements in 2019/20 include his debut at the Metropolitan Opera (“La damnation de Faust”) and the Theater an der Wien (“La vestale”), performances at the Bavarian State Opera (“Les Contes d’Hoffmann”, “Guillaume Tell”), the Vienna State Opera (“Lucia di Lammermoor”) and the Paris Opera (“Il pirata”).
He recently performed in “La Cenerentola” at the Vienna State Opera, “La clemenza di Tito” at Paris Opera, “Mitridate” at Covent Garden, “Orlando Paladino” in Zurich, “Les Contes d’Hoffmann” at the Bavarian State Opera, “La favorite” at Liceu Barcelona, “La damnation de Faust” at the BBC Proms, “Carmen” and “Fidelio” in Paris and Schubert’s “Messe Es-Dur” at the Salzburg Festival.
Other career highlights include appearances at La Scala, La Monnaie, Dutch National Opera, Semperoper Dresden, Lyric Opera Chicago, Carnegie Hall, Gewandhaus, Bunka Kaikan Hall, Aix-en-Provence and Pesaro.
