Ilya Khrzhanovsky
In his films and artistic projects, the artist and film-maker Ilya Khrzhanovsky, who was born in St. Petersburg in 1975, presents unsparing insights into the structures and dynamics of power within totalitarian systems. His film works include the short “Stop”, his debut feature “4” and his largest project to date, the film cycle made up of 14 features and several series, “DAU”. “DAU” received its world premiere in Spring 2019 in an art installation lasting several weeks made up of exhibitions, performances and film presentations at the Centre Pompidou, the Théâtre du Châtelet and the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris. Khrzhanovsky was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at the Seattle International Film Festival and the Best Director Prize at both the Athens International Film Festival and the Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema for directing his film “4“. His film “DAU. Natasha“ won the Silver Bear in competition at the Berlinale 2020 for the outstanding artistic contribution of the cameraman Jürgen Jürges. In addition to his film work, the Russian film-maker is also Artistic Director of the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Center.
