Seth Josel

A native of New York, now residing in Berlin, Seth Josel has become one of the leading instrumental pioneers of his generation. He earned degrees at the Manhattan School of Music in New York and Yale University. In 1988 he was Fulbright-Hays Scholarship recipient, Akademie Schloß Solitude grantee in 1992/93. He has premiered over 100 works and collaborated and consulted closely with such composers as Mauricio Kagel, Helmut Lachenmann, Tristan Murail, and James Tenney. Josel has concertized throughout Europe as well as the US, Canada and Japan, and he has been a guest performer with leading orchestras and ensembles, including the New York Philharmonic, the Helsinki Philharmonic, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. From 1991 till 2000 he was a permanent member of the Ensemble Musikfabrik. Josel has appeared as a soloist at several major European festivals including Salzburger Festpiele, Donaueschinger Musiktage, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival and MaerzMusik – Festival for Time Issues. In addition to his 4 solo CDs, he has recorded with Ensemble Musikfabrik, the Rundfunk-Sinfonie Orchester Berlin, Asko|Schönberg Ensemble Ensemble, Ensemble KNM Berlin and Ensemble Adapter. He also recorded Luciano Berio’s “Sequenza XI” for the complete “Sequenza” cycle released on Mode Records as well as Peter Ablinger’s “33-127”. Seth Josel is the co-author of “The Techniques of Guitar Playing” published by Bärenreiter Press. Currently he is a research fellow at the Orphues Institute in Ghent.
