Thom Luz

Thom Luz was born in Zurich in 1982 and studied acting at the Zurich University of the Arts from 2000 to 2005. Since his debut as a director with “Patience Camp” in 2009, he has been working for both independent and city theatres in Switzerland, Germany and France. The production “Archiv des Unvollständigen”, a devised play that he created together with dramatist Laura de Weck, was presented at Mülheimer Theatertage, Autorentheatertage of Deutsches Theater Berlin and at Heidelberger Stückemarkt. An evening of ghost music, “WHEN I DIE”, which was created at Luz’ home base theatre Gessnerallee Zurich, has been touring the world since its premiere at Munich’s Spielart Festival in 2013: It has been presented in Berlin, Reykjavík, Buenos Aires, Montpellier, Strasbourg, Amsterdam, Nanterre, Lausanne and Jerusalem, among others. Both these productions were decisive for his selection as “Emerging Director of the Year 2014” in the magazine “Theater heute”’s annual critics’ survey. His adaptation and production of Judith Schalansky’s “Atlas der abgelegenen Insel (Atlas of Remote Islands)” was invited to the 2015 Berlin Theatertreffen. Since the 2015/16 season, Thom Luz has been associate director at Theater Basel. One of his productions there was “LSD – Mein Sorgenkind”, which was invited to Heidelberger Stückemarkt and Autorentheatertage Berlin. For the opening of the 2016/17 season, Thom Luz gave his directing debut at Deutsches Theater Berlin: “Der Mensch erscheint im Holozän (Man in the Holocene)”, based on Max Frisch, was nominated for the Friedrich-Luft-Award.
