Emre Akal is an author and director based in Munich. His works, which operate at the interface of choreography, installation and image composition, have been shown at the Münchner Kammerspiele, the Thalia Theater Hamburg, the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin, the Schauspielhaus Graz, the Schauspiel Leipzig and in the independent scene in Munich, Stuttgart and Vienna, among others. He has received several awards for his plays, such as the exil dramatist prize of the WIENER WORTSTAETTEN, the Förderpreis für Theater der Stadt München and the Bayerischer Kunstpreis für Literatur. On his initiative, the Ayşe X Staatstheater was founded in 2019, a social sculpture as a counter-design to the institutional theatre landscape. In 2021/23, Emre Akal worked closely with the Münchner Kammerspiele as artist in residence.

Author and director Emre Akal lives in Munich. His works are meant to be a diagnosis of the times; they are based on painted pictures and a score that thinks of language and image in the categories of rhythm and notation. His pieces have been presented at WERK X in Vienna, the Bakirköy Belediye Tiyatrosu in Istanbul, at Münchner Kammerspiele and Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin. His play “Ostwind” received the Dance and Theatre Award of the City of Stuttgart and the State of Baden-Württemberg in 2015 and was presented at Münchner Kammerspiele in 2016. During the same year, he developed the play “Love it or leave it!” with Nurkan Erpulat at Maxim Gorki Theater and a piece at Landestheater Niederösterreich together with Hakan Savaş Mican. In May 2017, he won the jury award at the competition for emerging dramatists at Theater Drachengasse in Vienna and premiered his play “Heimat in Dosen”. Following “Mutterland…stille” in 2017, his play “Frau F. hat noch immer Angst” was presented at HochX in Munich in January 2019.
