Katie Mitchell

Katie Mitchell was born in Reading in 1964. She works as a theatre director and was Director-in-Residence at the Royal Shakespeare Company from 1996 to 1998 and at the Royal Court Theatre in London from 2000 to 2004. She has been directing plays at the Royal National Theatre since 1994 and became an Associate Director there in 2003. Furthermore, Katie Mitchell has worked at Schauspiel Köln, Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz, Berlin, Salzburger Festspiele, Burgtheater, Vienna, Dutch National Opera, Amsterdam and Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Berlin. In 1996, she received the Evening Standard Award for “The Phoenician Women” (Royal Shakespeare Company). Her production of “Wunschkonzert” by Franz Xaver Kroetz at Schauspiel Köln was invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen in 2009 and in the same year, she was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her services rendered to the theatre. In 2013, she received the Nestroy-Prize for her staging of “Reise durch die Nacht”, based on Friederike Mayröcker, at Schauspiel Köln; this production was also invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen. At Deutsches SchauSpielHaus Hamburg, she has directed “Alles Weitere kennen Sie aus dem Kino (The Rest Will Be Familiar to You from Cinema)” by Martin Crimp, “Glückliche Tage (Happy Days)” by Samuel Beckett, “Reisende auf einem Bein” by Herta Müller, “4.48 Psychose (4.48 Psychosis)” by Sarah Kane and “Bluets” by Maggie Nelson between 2013 and 2019. Katie Mitchell’s production “Anatomie eines Suizids (Anatomy of a Suicide)” has been invited to the 2020 Theatertreffen.
