Karin Henkel

Karin Henkel was born in Cologne in 1970 and began her directing career at the Vienna Burgtheater. She went on to stage productions at Thalia Theater in Hamburg, Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, Schauspielhaus Bochum, Schauspiel Leipzig, Schauspielhaus Zürich (“Woyzeck” 1999, “Das weite Land“ 2004), Deutsches Theater Berlin and Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus. Most recently, she has worked at Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg, Schauspiel Frankfurt, Münchner Kammerspiele and Schauspiel Köln. Six of her productions have already been invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen. Her latest productions at Schauspielhaus Zürich were “Much Ado about Nothing” by William Shakespeare, “Geschichten aus dem Wienerwald” by Ödön von Horváth, “Elektra”, based on the tragedies by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Sophocles, Aeschylus and Euripides and “Amphitryon und sein Doppelgänger”, based on Heinrich von Kleist (invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen in 2014 and to the first Swiss Theatertreffen). The critics’ survey of the magazine Theater heute selected “Amphitryon und sein Doppelgänger” as “Production of the Year”. During the 2015/16 season, she directed “Die zehn Gebote”, based on the film cycle “Dekalog” by Krzysztof Kieślowski and Krzysztof Piesiewicz at the Schiffbau at Schauspielhaus Zürich, and in 2016/17, she staged “Onkel Wanja” by Anton Chekhov.
