Karajan Academy of the Berliner Philharmoniker

The Karajan-Akademie of the Berliner Philharmoniker is an institution to promote the next generation of orchestra musicians. It was founded in 1972 by the chief conductor at that time Herbert von Karajan with the aim of training and educating the upcoming generation of excellent professional musicians. The scholars of the Karajan-Akademie receive individual instrument lessons as well as lessons in chamber music by members of the Berliner Philharmoniker. They also regularly play in rehearsals and concerts of the orchestra, giving them the opportunity to learn from world-class musicians and develop a concert routine. The Karajan-Akademie itself organizes a series of concerts lead by notable conductors such as Kirill Petrenko, Sir Simon Rattle, Reinhard Goebel, Susanna Mälkki or Matthias Pintscher presenting music ranging from baroque to avant garde. The concert joined by the current Artist in Residence at the Philharmonie and the monthly Carte blanche concerts, where the scholars play solo or as an ensemble, are also an integral part of the education offered by the Karajan-Akademie. The aim of this training and education is to optimally prepare young orchestra musicians for a successful career at the Berliner Philharmonie or a different prestigious orchestra. Around a third of the current members of the Berliner Philharmoniker have emerged from the Karajan-Akademie.
