Oscar Bianchi

Oscar Bianchi is an Italian-Swiss composer whose work bridges rigorous craftsmanship with visceral expression. He studied composition, choral conducting and electronic music at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Milan, later completing IRCAM’s master’s programme in Paris and earning a doctorate from Columbia University under the mentorship of Tristan Murail.

His first opera, “Thanks to My Eyes” – with a libretto and staging by Joël Pommerat – was commissioned by the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, and has since seen multiple international stagings. Bianchi’s music has been performed widely by leading ensembles and orchestras, including the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Ensemble Modern and Klangforum Wien.

A former fellow of the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program, Bianchi has received numerous awards, among them the Rome Prize (Villa Massimo), the Gaudeamus Award, the Grand Prix Sacem, the International Rostrum of Composers Prize and the German Record Critics’ Award. He is also the founder and Artistic Director of the International Young Composers and Conductors Academy in Ticino, Switzerland
