Gut Hesterberg is a typical family enterprise. Founded by her parents in 1999, Karoline Hesterberg (born in 1979) has been running the estate in Neuruppin since her father’s death along with her mother and more recently also her partner. Following the family’s relocation from her hometown of Hagen in 1999, Karoline Hesterberg studied agriculture at Berlin’s Humboldt University and wrote her PhD thesis on farming practices among hens and the role of valuable nutrients in the eggs produced by them. Surrounding the estate are free-range chickens and in particular cattle. An emblem of Gut Hesterberg are breeds such as Galloway, which are kept appropriately in herds and slaughtered and processed on site. As a schoolgirl in her hometown, Karoline Hesterberg had already gained experience caring for a smaller herd of Galloway cattle, which her family kept as a hobby on a meadow near their home and whose meat they also sold in small quantities. Country life is as indispensable to her as the proximity to Berlin as an interesting city. The Gut Hesterberg brand has been available in Berlin and Brandenburg for 15 years now, and the estate – declared the “most beautiful farm in Germany” by the ARD broadcaster – is a popular attraction in the greater Berlin area. In addition to the agricultural side of things, Karoline Hesterberg is also in charge of meat and sausage production, marketing in the estate’s own branches and other commercial enterprises, as well running the on-site farm shop and restaurant.
