Arturo Tamayo

Spanish conductor Arturo Tamayo is an indispensable interpreter of contemporary music and has premiered countless works by important composers such as Iannis Xenakis, John Cage and Wolfgang Rihm in his 30 years of concert activity. Arturo Tamayo was born in Madrid, where he studied the piano, the drums, theory and composition. He was awarded an honorary prize for composition and completed his conducting studies at the Musikhochschule Freiburg with Wolfgang Fortner and Klaus Huber. He gained further experience working with Pierre Boulez and Witold Rowicki. From 1979 to 1998 Tamayo was professor for the interpretation of 20th century music at the Freiburger Musikhochschule. He has conducted since 1977, working with several important European orchestras, such as the Ensemble Intercontemporain, Ensemble Modern, London Sinfonietta and Klangforum Wien, as well as the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonic Orchestra London, the Orchestre National de France, the Residentie Orkest Den Haag, the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and the Deutsche Symphonie-Orchester Berlin.
