Joy Kristin Kalu

Joy Kristin Kalu holds an M.A. in Theatre Studies and American Studies and a Ph.D. in Theatre Studies from the Freie Universität Berlin. Her dissertation, “The Aesthetics of Repetition”, analyses theories and strategies of repetition in the visual arts, performance, and theatre of the US neo-avantgarde. She co-authored the book “Theater als Intervention: Politiken ästhetischer Praxis” (2015). Her interest in repetition continues in her current work, provisionally titled “Stagings of Therapy in Artistic and Psychological Practice”, which explores theatrical processes in various forms of therapy. Other research interests include contemporary experimental theatre in Germany and the United States and Critical Whiteness Studies. Beside her academic work, she is a theatre practitioner and curator and has been working as a dramaturge at the Sophiensæle in Berlin since the 2017/18 season. Previously, she worked with the Thalia Theater in Hamburg, Volkbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, the Actors’ Gang in Los Angeles, New York’s Wooster Group and the KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin.
