André Jung was born in Luxembourg and studied at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart. He worked afterward in ensembles in Heidelberg, Brussels, Strasbourg and Frankfurt am Main. At Theater Basel, Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg and Schauspielhaus Zürich, Jung worked with directors including Werner Düggelin, Hans Hollmann, Christoph Marthaler, David Mouchtar-Samorai, Stefan Pucher, Falk Richter, Johan Simons, Herbert Wernicke and Jossi Wieler.
He was part of the ensemble of Müncher Kammerspiele from 2003 to 2015 and played in productions directed by, amongst others, Johan Simons (“King Lear”, “Hotel Savoy”, “Hiob” and “The Restless Noise”), Armin Petras (“Bauern sterben”, “John Gabriel Borkman”), Jossi Wieler (“Rechnitz – Der Würgeengel”) and Alvis Hermanis, whose production of “Späte Nachbarn” was also shown at Thalia Theater Hamburg. From 2013 to 2016, André Jung was a guest at Staatsoper Stuttgart in „Ariadne auf Naxos“, directed by Jossi Wieler, he was a guest at Forum Neue Musik der frankfurter gesellschaft für neue musik in Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s „Ich wandte mich und sah alles Unrecht, das geschah unter der Sonne” as well as at the Ruhr Triennial in Bochum and Staatsoper Hamburg. He performed at Staatsoper Stuttgart in „Orpheus in der Unterwelt”, directed by Armin Petras. In 2017, Jürgen Flimm staged „Faust-Szenen” with him at Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, followed in 2018 by Mark Andre’s „wunderzaichen” directed by Jossi Wieler at Staatsoper Stuttgart and Werner Düggelin’s „Lenz” at Schauspielhaus Zurich.
Since the 2018/2019 season, André Jung has performed in Karin Henkel’s production of “Die Übriggebliebenen”, adapted from Thomas Bernhard at Schauspielhaus Hamburg and in 2019/2020 at Schauspiel Köln in „Eines langen Tages Reise in die Nacht“ (directed by Luk Perceval). In the summer of 2020, he performed in Burkhard C. Kominski’s theatre parcourse „Wir sind aus solchem Stoff wie Träume sind in Stuttgart“. Jung has already worked with Thorsten Lensing multiple times and was in his productions “Der Kirschgarten” (2011), “Karamasow” (2014), “Unendlicher Spaß“ („Infinite Jest“, 2018) and „Verrückt nach Trost” (2022). Lensing’s production of David Foster Wallace’s “Unendlicher Spaß” was invited to the 2019 edition of Theatertreffen.
Alongside his work in theatres, André Jung also regularly embodies roles for film and television and has performed in over 50 audio dramas. He received the 2003 Golden Mask award of Schauspielhaus Zürich. He has been selected as actor of the year multiple times by the magazine “Theater heute”. He received the Viennese Nestroy theater award in 2009 for the role of Krapp in Wieler’s production of “Das letzte Band / Bis dass der Tag Euch scheidet“. In 2019, Jung was awarded the Gertrud Eysoldt ring from the German Academy of the Performing Arts. He has been a member of the Berlin Academy of the Arts since 2010. André Jung has regularly been a guest at the Salzburg Festival since 1998. There, he has performed in, amongst other productions, Elfriede Jelinek’s “Er (nicht als er)” (directed by Jossi Wieler), in Horváth’s “Zur schönen Aussicht” and in 2001 in “What You Will” (directed by Christoph Marthaler) in Chekhov’s “The Seagull” (directed by Falk Richter, 2004) in Beckett’s/Handke’s Krapp’s “Das letzte Band / Bis dass der Tag Euch scheidet“ (2009) and “Meine Bienen. Eine Schneise” (directed by Nicolas Liautard, 2012). Most recently, he was seen in 2019 in the world premiere of Theresia Walser’s “Die Empörten” (directed by Burkhard C. Kominski) and in 2021 in Hofmannsthal’s “Das Bergwerk zu Falun” (directed by Jossi Wheeler) at the Salzburg Festival.
