Joulia Strauss

Joulia Strauss was born in St. Petersburg in 1974. She is a supercat, shaman, multi-media artist, sculptor and political activist and stands for adisciplinary art and for the unity of technology, science, activism and art in Berlin and Athens.

Joulia Strauss studied at the New Academy of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg and University of Fine Arts, Berlin (Georg Baselitz class, Master, President’s Fine Arts Award). Her sculptures, paintings, performances, drawings and videos were presented at solo exhibitions such as “Modulating Politics“, Kunsthalle Palazzo, Switzerland (2011), “Welcome to the Mediterranean Basin“, Beton7 Gallery, Athens (2010), “Cat-Notation“, COMA Gallery, Berlin (2008), and were shown in group exhibitions at the documenta 14 in Kassel and Athens, Martin-Gropius-Bau, Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art in New York, Tirana Biennale, Museum of Modern Art Ostend, Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, 2nd Athens Biennale, Fourth Moscow Biennale, Tate Modern, ZKM | Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, among others.

In collaboration with Peter Weibel and Friedrich Kittler, Joulia Strauss published the book “Götter und Schriften Rund ums Mittelmeer (Gods and Writing around the Mediterranean)“ in 2018, Wilhelm Fink Verlag, Paderborn. She is also a founder and organizer of Avtonomi Akadimia and has published a special edition “Global Activism“ of the magazine Krytyka Polityczna.
