Jan Klata was born in Warsaw in 1973 and studied directing in his native city and in Krakow. His first production was Gogol’s “The Government Inspector” in Wałbrzych. The following year Klata was invited to the Theatertreffen Stückemarkt with his play “Usmiech grejpfruta – Smiling Grapefruit”, which was subsequently – in common with many of his productions – produced at the Teatr Polski in Wrozław. These included “H” after Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” (2005), the German-Polish theatre project “Transfer!” about refugees and banishment (2006), “Oresteia” after Aeschylus (2007), “Sprawa Dantona” (The Danton Affair, 2008; winner of the Konrad Swinarski Prize), “Trylogia”, “Ziemia obiecana” (The Promised Land; Łodz, 2009) und “Kazimirz i Karolina” (2010). In April 2011 Klata will stage Franz Kafka’s “America” at Schauspielhaus Bochum. Several of his productions have been seen in Berlin at the Hebbel am Ufer. Jan Klata has received numerous prestigious theatre awards including the famous Theatre Prize of the Polish newspaper Polityka in 2006.
