How to Frame – zur Unsicherheit der Form

Talks & Book Launch

The upsetting of established frames, rules and roles is a significant innovation of contemporary aesthetics. Whether and how something is perceived as art, who holds which position in this process and what can be the effects of aesthetics – it all largely depends on the positing of institutional, political, spatio-temporal and communicative frames. Foreign Affairs has been continually realising productions with international artists to challenge various institutional framings. Together with the University of the Arts Berlin (UdK), Foreign Affairs has repeatedly explored the interfaces of performative and visual arts. In various formats complementing the festival, including symposia, artists’ talks and the discursive format Student Affairs, they continually practised a critical examination of the interfaces between different art forms. The question “How to Frame?” was the point of departure. Which frames do we put in place when we programme performing arts and visual arts? Provoking and moderating an encounter of these aspects is the aim of the book “How to Frame”. And yet, this transfer of questions from five years of Foreign Affairs into a book is another attempt to lend a new frame to art and its reflection. As snapshot and storage device, it bears witness to the theoretical contexts, curatorial questions and artistic positions of recent years. Based on the articles in the book, there will be further discussions of these issues, joined by featured artists of this year’s festival.
