A Theatre Performance in Two Parts
Theatre “School for dramatic arts”, Moscow
Workshop of Dmitri Krymov
The title of this theatre evening has nothing to do with the author of the same name (russ. Горький). It refers to a town near Moscow (russ. Горки).

The set designer and director Dmitry Krymov explores 20th-century Russian history with his set-design students and actors. The Soviet myths that were rammed down the throats of their parents and grandparents during literature lessons in Soviet schools are read from a modern-day perspective and presented in an artistically unique, visually and dramatically alienated way that highlights the texts’ absurdity as well as their tragedy.
Dmitry Krymov (born in 1954) has worked as a set designer since 1976. Since 2002 he has headed a degree course in Set Design at the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts (RAT-GITIS), Moscow. In Anatoly Vasiliev’s School of Dramatic Art he heads his own workshop where he works with set design students and young actors.
