The festival newspaper aims to develop the work of young cultural journalists. These follow all the events of the Theatertreffen and publish their impressions in reviews, essays and features in their won paper: the tt festivalzeitung. They are supported by experienced critics functioning as mentors who can offer their professional guidance in theatre criticism. In this way the young editors have an opportunity to create a special form of arts section which reaches a wide readership as a supplement to the Berliner Zeitung with a print run of 200,000 copies. The festival newspaper should not appeal solely to theatre enthusiasts, it is our aim to reach readers with little experience of theatre and interest them in the Theatertreffen.
The tt festivalzeitung as a Download
Compared with the Stückemarkt and the International Forum, the tt festivalzeitung, launched in 2005 in co-operation with the Berliner Zeitung and Berlin’s Universität der Künste, is still very young. In the space of three years it has developed into a professional publication capable of attracting a number of promising young editors now working in influential media outlets. The festival newspaper has awakened a new interest in cultural journalism and has become an indispensable companion to the Theatertreffen.
After three successful years, the concept will be expanded for 2008: the festival newspaper will become international. By extending participation to other countries, international perspectives will appear in the newspaper, new views of arts journalism will be introduced, space will be created for international cultural and political discussion and, of course, new readers will be reached.
