SCHLEUDERGANG NEUE DRAMATIK

Symposium on the future of contemporary drama

9 to 11 October 2009

What is the position of the contemporary play? Are the most varied performative projects, text collages and adaptations of novels and films taking the place of the classical theatre text? The writers demand „More support!“ and don’t see their own work on stage often enough. „Writers are doing better than theatre“ claim the critics. Why do the new plays which are launched onto the “market” by development programmes, competitions, courses and theatres themselves disappear from the repertoire after their original productions? Is a productive working relationship between writer and director the key to lasting success? Are second productions the best way of promoting writers?

Participants in the symposium on the future of contemporary drama are challenged to formulate a vision for anchoring new writing securely in the current theatre landscape.
