In his political utopia, Nazareth Hassan asks what would happen if the reparation payments promised to all African-Americans in the 19th century would actually be paid out today.
In his text “VANTABLACK”, Nazareth Hassan wonders what would happen if the reparation payments promised to African-Americans in the 19th century would be paid out in the middle of the 21st century, and every one were to receive the promised 40 acres and a mule. Hassan creates a dramaturgy of vignettes, throwing brief spotlights that ask whether – and if so, how – the power relations between black and white US-citizens would shift if that were to happen. Would it change the way people love, live, work and communicate? In “VANTABLACK”, Nazareth Hassan combines political utopia with personal experience and finds a very particular, many-voiced narrative style.
