Berliner Festspiele’s Theatertreffen is once again looking for aspiring arts journalists to join the 2025 Theatertreffen-Blog. The deadline for applications is 10 February 2025.
The 62nd edition of Theatertreffen will take place from 2 to 18 May 2025 at Haus der Berliner Festspiele and other venues across Berlin. Since 2005, the festival has annually invited emerging arts journalists to take part in a 17-day scholarship programme during Theatertreffen. The Theatertreffen-Blog, launched as a successor of the festival’s newspaper in 2009, is an established digital brand in the media landscape and intends to grant access to the world of culture and media to a wide range of young voices.
The 2025 Theatertreffen-Blog, once again headed conceptually and editorially by arts journalists GreteGötze and TamaraMarszalkowski, sees itself as an editorial workshop where theatre and arts journalism can be tried out in the context of an ongoing festival. It is an opportunity to focus and expand points of view, to develop concepts and implementation of journalistic formats and to try new approaches to the analysis of theatrical forms.
The Open Call of the Theatertreffen-Blog is aimed at young theatre enthusiasts who would like to view the 2025 Theatertreffen from a critical perspective. Coverage will both include the usual text form and be open to audio and social media formats. A pronounced interest in arts journalism and the festival’s programme is more important than an academic background or experience in journalism. The ten most remarkable productions and the additional festival programme are to be explored from various angles, and issues of cultural politics will be reflected. Networking with industry experts, with the Theatertreffen-jury as well as with fellows of the International Forum and participants of the Open Campus is another essential component of the programme.
Requirements for participation are the willingness to conduct in-depth journalistic work and to see the ten most remarkable productions, a proven interest in the theatre, and attendance in Berlin for the entire duration of the festival. Texts may be written in English; the working language is German.
The scholarship includes accommodation for fellows not resident in Berlin, travelling expenses, attendance at festival events and networking meetings as well as an expense allowance. The bloggers’ work will be published on the Theatertreffen-Blog’s website and Instagram channel.
Detailed information on the Open Call is now available on the website of Berliner Festspiele.
