Spanish Fly. Bastian Reiber, Wolfram Koch, Harald Warmbrunn, Hans Schenker, Sophie Rois © Thomas Aurin
Frank Castorf’s old battleship at Rosa Luxemburg Platz is roaring with pleasure! Bourgeois entertainment by Arnold and Bach with the wonderfully critical title ‘Spanish Fly’.
And what do we see? Prosperous Wilheminian individualism in full bloom: fully mechanised bourgeois puppets who think of nothing but money and sex behind the most honourable facades of decency. People who always talk of feelings and love while behaving like robots. Character actors who arouse our trust while at the same time believing each other capable of every deception and every despicable act possible. Deformed and freakish souls who play the most tasteless and most brutal jokes on each other. And the audience cheer in blissful understanding. Herbert Fritsch has hit the nerve of the capital.
